BREAKING OUT
Learn the basics of street dance, from Hip Hop to Break Dance (bboying/bgirling). Let’s make “CAI’s Best Dance Crew”! Recommended but not required: beanie, bandana, tennis shoes.
EN GARDE! FENCING
Touché! In this workshop students will learn the fine art of Fencing. Beginning fencers will parrie, thrust, lunge and bout, while learning the etiquette and the strategies of this fun, safe sport. All workshops are taught by nationally ranked fencing teachers.
GYMNASTICS
This workshop helps students develop strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, cardio-vascular development and spacial orientation. The workshop will focus on floor exercises and basic tumbling. Gymnastics serves as a basis for all sports.
HIP HOP
High energy is the way to describe this workshop! Complete with current and retro music, the students will be taught the basic stretches, warm up exercises, techniques and the full choreographed routines. Routines will be based upon popular music and/or classic songs from the years gone by. All routines feature a moment for each student to shine as well as be an interactive part in costuming and choreographing the routine.
MAGIC
Learn the tricks and secrets of magicians and become one, yourself. How exciting it can be to be able to pick up ordinary objects like a coin, a scarf, a deck of cards—or even a pencil—and do magic with them! This workshop is both for the student who has aspirations to be a performing magician and the student who is intrigued by magic and would like to know some tricks to amaze his or her friends and family.
ONSTAGE
This fun-filled workshop uses the art of improvisation to guide students in developing their own variety of characters, situations, and scenes that will make them laugh, cry, and everything in between! Live piano accompaniment and original music, too!
MUSICAL THEATRE
Learn the three basics of musical theatre, singing, dancing, and acting, all combined into one spectacular workshop. A more advanced workshop, but good for the beginner, students learn the transition from dialogue, to song to dance, all the while keeping the continuity of the play with the over all development of the characters. They also learn stage direction, and the ability to work as one in an ensemble setting.
PASSPORT TO RHYTHM
This workshop is a fun introduction to beginning hand drumming techniques. Students will learn about the many different drums and drumming styles from around the globe and have hands-on experience playing all kinds of drums. The class will discuss how to prepare yourself for drumming, how to choose the right drum, how to how to tune your drum, how to learn and notate rhythms. There will be discussion of timing, concentration, focus, and playing in unison. Students will work on technique and talk about different forms of drumming and drum circles and how to participate in them. Students will enjoy videos of various percussion groups like Guinea’s Les Ballets Africains and Stomp. The camp session ends with a live performance. Students may bring their own hand drum; but all kinds of drums are provided for everyone.
SING IT!
This fun-filled, process-oriented workshop encourages each student to use her/his voice to the fullest through breathing and movement techniques. Students will learn about pitch, diction, “owning” the lyrics, and more! Different styles of music, such as pop/rock, blues, jazz, folk/country, Broadway and composing original lyrics will be explored. Live piano and guitar accompaniment provided.
